Coventry Carol, Early Intermediate

Written for Early Intermediate, this arrangement gives plenty of repetition to help the student feel secure, while challenging them with enough variety to make it interesting! Written in the key of G minor, but it also hints at G Dorian mode, which gives it that Medieval/ New Age sound. The melody is presented in the Right hand without elaboration, and the Left hand is “drone” like. The secret to performing this piece is artistic expression. The left hand must be quiet, in the background, and the right hand melody must sing! Play careful attention to the dynamics, which will lead you to shape the musical phrases. Another teaching moment is the meter: Students will understand ¾ time, but the challenge is to feel it in “One”, which gives it a dancing, lilt-like feeling.
