Need a system, a process for thinking through how to learn music? Here’s a guide to help you break down the steps. These are big picture ideas. Within each step, allows us to discover the specific Elements of Music. Step 1: Read it- Really look at each note, each rhythm. Think through how the piece is organized. Do you see any patterns? Step 2: Think it. What fingering will you use? Are you familiar with all the rhythms? Break down each measure and count them. Step 3: You know the piece but need lots of repetition to develop muscle memory. Step 4. We are getting close now! Can you play the piece with no mistakes or hesitations? Step 4: This is it, baby! You know the piece and you can really play it! Try playing with your eyes closed so you can just feel the piece! Maybe add your own style to it- variations in tempo or even change it a bit.
